My recent focus on the work of William James leads me to comment that
his definition of "free" will is limited to a choice, between
alternatives, which if made now can be reasonably expected to be
experienced in the future as the "wished for" results. But he
emphasizes that in many cases " no decision" or "no choice" is a choice.
In the spreading or replication of value patterns or memes my guess is
that this is the most common or prevalent case.
A good deal of what you talk about in the rest of the 2:46 pm split
could be tied to what James discussed as "habit" in his early work.
