Only individuals can have a thought, and any group effort towards
this end is just a sum of the individuals thinking. Ideas are never created
or stored in a collective.

I've read a little bit about the Japanese culture and how they view the
importance of the group and how it operates so they might disagree, might be
some cultural bias here
 
As regards the "I" myth I believe god may have started the ball rolling on
Mt Sinai, in response to Moses asking his name the burning bush replied "I
am that I am", deities eh!!
