Hi Dan,
DAN:
Yes, similar but different...but I fail to find references in Lila that
support your thesis pertaining to Dynamic Quality being experience. If you
have time, could you provide a few pertinent quotes to chew on so we can see
how they taste?
ROG:
Thanks for asking. Below are a few of the better examples.....
On P75 of the paperback, prior to the DQ/sq split, Mr Pirsig mentions that
value is the "essence of experience," and that the Quality (of stove sitting)
"is an experience". And on the next page that "The value itself is an
experience."
On P118 he writes that "Reality, which is value, is understood by every
infant. It is a universal starting place of experience..."
On P133 he references DQ as the "front edge of his experience."
On P137, the entire baby story and the inference of subjects and objects
deals with DQ as experience.
On P418, he writes that "The MOQ says pure experience is value." On the next
page he clarifies that DQ is "...direct everyday experience." and that
"Through this identification of pure value with pure experience, the MOQ
paves the way for an enlarged way of looking at experience..."
All of this is of course just an extension of similar ideas which are rampant
throughout ZMM. Also, Pirsig admits his MOQ is an extension of James'
Radical Empiricism, which is most assuredly about pure experience being the
dynamic and flowing base of reality from which static subjects and objects
are derived.
Hope this helps.....
