Hi Platt, Wim,

WIM
>Striking back when attacked and preventive attack as well,
>Jonathan, are parts of a very old social pattern of value.

You are correct that these patterns are ancient, and have been preserved
through evolution. Perhaps they are as much biological as social. Like
disease, I don't think these patterns can ever be completely eliminated.

Your discussions on disease control are interesting, and I find that I agree
with you both.
Careless overuse can lead to the appearance of resistant superbugs, but this
is not an argument against the wise use of antibiotics where appropriate.
Failure to prescribe antibiotics when dealing with a suspected case of
bacterial meningitus is probably gross incompetence.

Furthermore, it is important that when antibiotics are used, they are used
at the correct dose and continued for the full course of treatment.

The battle against disease is a never ending battle. That is no excuse not
to fight it.

Jonathan
