I agree with you . . . that passage in Lila was one i paid close attention to. Unfortunately, America has followed intellect and neglected morals all too often. George Washington warned against the dangers of foreign alliances, and told Americans to shun them at all costs. Our alliances with the Middle Eastern countries for the purpose of obtaining cheap oil is one example. Intellect says yes, but leaves out the fact that we might have to go to war for these countries. Intellect caused the CIA to provide Osama Bin Laden with weapons and money and training to expel the Soviets out of Afghanistan in the 80's. It seemed like a rational way to accomplish the expulsion of the Soviets without losing american lives. And then did the same in Nicaragua later, but these guys murdered 30,000 civilians. Immoral? Yes. But it still accomplished what needed to be done (whatever that was). I think now, especially, morals need to be considered in whatever w bush's cabinet decides to do.
