Hey John,
Pirsig's stance on the self is "mystic." DQ is
"personal" so there can be NO universal description of
the self. Any universal description of the "self" is
an error, which is the common mistake in New Age
philosophy, such as Wilber and Nussbaum. The only self
that materializes is a self based on false drama,
false in the sense that the drama only exists to
create the self. Any talk about the self is the false
drama self. So you can't talk about the " true self"
but you can "show" it. So LILA is the "showing" of the
true self, and I guess in that sense, mystic.
> Pirsig is
> prone to minimise the 'self',
I disagree. Half of the book is ABOUT LILA, which is
only of interest to PIRSIG for the most part. To speak
about the self is to speak about a picture of the
self.
You've got to learn to "see" and stop "Thinking." I
guess I have this urge to cure you of this "new age"
sickness, which I suppose reveals something about my
false drama. There is no cure to this false drama,
well death is as Socrate might say, but you can fight
it as Nietzsche would say. So to bastardize David
Byrne, "stop thinking sense."
Angus
