If we start with:
"The Metaphysics of Quality is a continuation of the mainstream of
twentieth-century American philosophy. It is a form of pragmatism, of
instrumentalism, which says the test of the true is the good. It adds
that this good is not a social code or some intellectualized Hegelian
Absolute. It is direct everyday experience." (Lila Pg 366)
and add just a smidgen of dictionary:
" pragmatism ...2 a method or tendency in philosophy, started by C.S.
Pierce and William James, which determines the meaning and truth of all
concepts by their practical consequences". (Websters New World Dictionary
Third Edition 1988)
it can be conjectured that if your society judges you insane; it is perfectly
reasonable, practical, and good to adopt the logical metaphysical
conclusion of idealism "that everything is created by your mind."
because accepting this premise maybe the only path your society allows
for you to regain your freedom.
Likewise, if you find yourself approaching a summer afternoon
thunderstorm in the middle of South Dakota , on an overloaded
motorcycle, you value your life, and that of your son, it probably
better to adopt the "materialist" premise "that everything is created of
atoms". Because accepting this premise may keep you from experiencing
the loss of traction on a rain slick road that is predicted by Newton's
mechanics. Or the heat of ignition predicted by Ohm, that is generated
by electrons passing through a resistor (you, your motorcycle, and son)
as the difference in value between the earth and the sky rebalances
itself, in an instant.
But lacking a "Continental" birth, surely these pragmatic concepts are
neither real or good.
