Hi Rick,
>I think your friend George and I would get along just fine....
Actually I really don't know this guy at all. I go to his website frequently
though, he has good summaries of personalty theories. I just really wanted to
hear his response about tree in the forest thing so I emailed him.
I was kind of curious about the difference of undifferentiated aesthetic
matrix compared to undifferentiated aesthetic continuum.
I think you are right that ZAMM uses the second to bridge the East/West but
Lila also had a North/South theme in it. I was wondering if it too was a
continuum (just vertical) or maybe it was more ambitious and tried to capture
undifferentiated aesthetic matrix, bridging the North,South, East, West.
I know most people like ZAMM better but we all know how Pirsig calls ZAMM the
popular one and Lila the smart one I am wondering if this is why. Personally
I think ZAMM was a better story but thought Lila was more complete.
Gav brought up whether there is a contradiction between ZAMM and Lila
regarding the question of morals. Boeree just said in the last email that he
liked ZAMM much better and I know that opinion is very popular but for some
reason I think the moral compass is shown in Lila. My bet is that you are
more of a ZAMM fan so I will be curious what you will say.
If you think this direction thing is silly let me just say that why it came to
mind was just thinking about Faulkner (west/east theme) and Toni Morrisons
(north/south theme).
We were questioning how we can use this as a moral guide and I think for our
moral compass that we really need the "matrix" than the continuum.
P.S. Thanks for reassurance about my uncertainty about absolutes not being
contradictory.
Erin

>AKA 'the undifferentiated aesthetic continuum'... Northrup's idea ultimately
