RICK: I guess I would concur with Gav's characterization of ZMM as a more
'intuitive' approach to morality and LILA and a more 'rational' one.
ERIN: I interpreted it the opposite way. So who's on first..
RICK: I interpreted it the opposite way. Although I do think that
understanding ZMM's points on 'pre/post-intellectual awareness' and the
'Quality event' are ESSENTIAL to understanding the static/dynamic split of
LILA.
ERIN: okay, i can now see why you are interpreting ZAMM as more intuitive.
I guess why I interpereted LILA as more intuitive is that at the end Pirsig
seemed to come to a full circle to me. In ZMM he splits quality into classic
and romantic and throughout the novel sits on a classic pedastal and looks
down upon the romantic couple (i have read in his own words about he was
condescending toward them). But in ZMM we do get the essence of the pre/post
intellectual awareness so yeah that is intuitive.
In LILA seemed more ambitious and tries to capture all of humanity into that
pre/post awarness. So in ZMM he shows that truth for him as an individual and
LILA he shows that is true for everybody, so it seemed less "elitist" to me.
But I am glad we agree intuitive is the moral compass, that is the important
part.
