Hey Erin
ERIN
Have you ever read Metaphors We Live By, By Lakoff
> Johnson. Platt's wording "Pirsig strikes again", "The war" clearly shows
how
> he is approaching this discussion.

I love the Lakoff/Johnson book.... the opening chapter on 'time is money'
has always been a personal favorite of mine. Since I first read that
chapter I've kept an eye open for time-metaphors that don't portray 'time'
as precious commodity. In ZMM, Pirsig alludes to the difference between
making 'good TIME' and making 'GOOD time.' Me thinks the two thoughts are
not unrelated....
ERIN
Lakoff gives the example of thinking about
> "argument is a dance" metaphor and how it changes the concept of argument.
> Although we all fall into the "argument is a war" trap, I think Platt you

RICK
Notice that Lakoff and Johnson don't give examples of how this Dance
metaphor would manifest itself linguistically (they provide plenty for the
War metaphor... but only the suggestion of the Dance metaphor). I think
their 'dance argument' is a nice metaphor for difference between dialectic
and rhetoric. Think of Zeno, "Rhetoric is an open hand, Dialectic is closed
fist." That is... 'Rhetoric is open hand (dance), dialectic is closed fist
(war)."
