Hi Rod, thanks for the interest. First: I noticed your disappointment
with the discussion, but join Rick here: As long as Pirsig's ideas
are the topic it's good, after all it's about how they apply which is at
stake, but not to get sidetracked over to your criticism of my 4th
level definition.

The Pirsig paraphrasing is correct enough, but by feeling you
possibly refer to - for instance - feeling of pain. This is biological
processing (*see footnote) or SENSING in my book, and in the
same book q-intellect isn't awareness of senses, rather processing
what has been processed by the social level which has been
processed by the biological ... (I liked the "process" term)

> Feeling is sensing autonomically, it is not necessarily an emotion,

"Feeling" covers both senses and emotion (same thing in all Indo-
European languages it seems) maybe fine for SOM (created by
SOM naturally!) but terribly inaccurate for QM's purposes. All living
things sense, but only processed by social reality does sensing
become emotion, and this distinction is important. For example, a
strictly biological organism has no expression that signals "pain"
while a social being has, this shared sensation is emotion. OK,
you may grimace and moan if hurt even if alone - its
"autonomically".

Emotions arising purely from thoughts? I wonder what you mean?
Naturally, at the social level an element of "abstraction" enters
existence, that what Pirsig means by calling the social and
intellectual level "subjective".

The moment anyone comes up with a MOQ-based objection I will
drop it, but that has not happened yet. Hope it does not sound too
glib.

(*) Biology's ability to "process matter" - to read one particular
molecular configuration as good and another as bad (nd a million
shades in between) is what allowed life. We know the scientific
explanations, f.ex.how opiates block nerve synapse ...etc, but why
"pain hurts" is a deep mystery. But so are all q-levels' lifting
existence to new heights.
