I guess "truth" becomes irrelevant when it comes to theories of how
our universe came to be. About all one can hope for is a "good guess."
Actually, now that I think about it, what is "really true" in matters one
cannot observe directly always boils down to one's "best guess" based
on whatever evidence one is able to assemble at the time. Then the
problem becomes how do you avoid seeking evidence that doesn't
fulfill your preconceived ideas--like the idea science relies on that the
physical world contains patterns awaiting to be discovered?

My original point, again, was that scientific theories about how our
world began are as fantastic as the Pirsig's theory that the world is a
moral order arising from Quality.
