Maybe it's wrong to call them cowards if we're talking only about their
lack of a fear of death. But surely you can see something cowardly in
hijacking a plane full of unarmed people and then brutally attacking targets
that have no means of defense. Not to mention the inherent cowardice in
planning an attack that you know you won't be around to face any
consequences for.
Besides, even if the terrorists weren't 'cowardly,' I don't think it
would be proper to call them 'brave' either. I think bravery (the
traditional opposite of cowardice) entails the risk of losing something you
don't want to lose. A firefighter who rushes into a crumbling World Trade
Center is brave because he is risking the life he wants to keep. It feels
wrong to say, 'The terrorists bravely flew the plane into the side of
building...."
