Rashheed, Bo, all

This initially started out as a reply to the death penalty thread, but it
grew too large to be contained within it. I wanted to expand upon the value
of patterns.

Doesn't it come down to value, if the value of an individual is the sum of
their ideas (their intellectual patterns )then the value of an individual
who murders another is less than the value of someone who does not kill.
Just as an individual is of lesser value than society, does it not follow
that patterns within individuals may be of a lower or higher value.

We cannot all be of equal value to society, harsh but true... somebody who
is prepared to kill for personal gain/ satisfaction, instantly loses a great
part of his/her value to society.

Not all patterns can be of equal value, how can we possibly say Einstein and
Hitler developed patterns that were of equal value.

One purpose of the law is to identify patterns of lower value.

The more i ntellectualise this, the muddier the whole question is coming.
But I know that I personally value certain patterns much higher than others,
as I'm sure we all do.

How we identify those patterns of higher value is key.

A) Patterns which are of greater service to the progress of society must be
of higher value than patterns which only serve the individual.

Patterns which hinder the progress of society, are of lower value than (A)
above, and are of lower value than patterns which hinder the progress of the
individual.

I was struck recently by an article on Archimedes book "THE METHOD", which
was written over 2200 years ago, if it had been available to renaissance
mathematicians, mathematics would have evolved at a much quicker rate, and
the likelihood is that we would be 400 years ahead of where we are now.

Surely the pattern Archimedes is of such high value as was the pattern
Einstein, that we must aim to recognise these patterns whilst they are
around.

more to come....
