Quality is what is guiding the jam session! :-)
Qaulity, itself, is the feedback! As you perform as a
band, you're either tight, in the groove (call it what
you will), or you just suck! The joke in our band is
"Hey! Somebody turn the suck button off!" But when
you're on, you just know it, and your audience knows
it, too! It's quality, and everybody recognizes it.
And that quality is what always brings the musician
back (and the audience). It's really undefined, as
Pirsig said!

I would like to start a thread about this
"conductor"-mentality that we intellectual types get
stuck on. It's going to take some time for me to
develop it, though.

I've really enjoyed this discussion. It's definitely
helping to clarify things for me! I hope it is for you
too!
