Wage ho disbuters:
I dissagre with both sides here. Capitalism is not a weak system, it is
very strong, very dynamic. Capitalism is tied hand in hand with a sort of
ideology which insures the smooth running of the apparatus. the domination
is much deeper than economic (most of which problems have been alieved by
state intervention, beauractic organization and technology. It is all very
efficent, very smooth.
"the refusal has been refuted by the alleviation of misery"
Cries for something more than efficency are drowned out as reason is
absorbed as the legitimizing force for an efficent beauracratic machine
which nessicarily integrates people deeper into Reason. God. efficency.
Will of god. thinkless, calculate more, quantification static apparatus.
The arguments are stated much more profoundly by herbert marcuse. I suggest
everyone willing to think hard about a topic and read slowly should read
"some implications of modern technology". Or, go read one dimnsional man,
but assuming you care enough to read anything, the essay is the best summary
and introduction. But, I'll quote some of the better parts (these comments
are about the rationality of modern society, not pheasibility of captialism
for satisfaction, which is established):
"The principals of competative efficency favors the enterprises with the
most highly mechanized and rationalized industrial equipment (which enclude
men as the maintainers of the apparatus {-elliot}). Technological power
tends to the consentration of economic power, to "large units of production,
of vast corporate enterprises producing large quantities of often striking
variety of goods, of industrial empires owning and controling materials,
equipment, and processes from the extraction of raw materials to the
distribution of finished products, of dominance over an entire industry by a
small number of giant concerns....""
I believe MoQ educated people have the proper background to relate to these
topics, but i had a teacher talk about the general subject for a few months,
explain some finer points, brainwash me, etc. The topic is mainly about
social patterns vs. intellectual ones, as a system prevailing of of
individuals (even the definition of individual has changed to allow their
exsistance in One dimensional society).
"the idea of compliant efficency perfectly illustrates the structure of
technological rationality. Rationality is being transformed from a critical
force into one of adjustment and compliance. Autonomy of reason loses its
meaning in the same measure as the thoughts, feelings and actions of men are
shaped by the technical requirements of the apparatus which they themselves
created."
""The material fate of the masses becomes increasingly dependant upon the
continious and correct functioning of the increasingly beauracratic order of
private capitalistic organizations""
"Mechanized mass production is filling in the empty spaces in which
individuality (read intillectual level) could assert itself."
And there's a good one at the end of my essay, which would be time consuming
to get right now (im tired).
Good night, sleep tight
Elliot
