Hi Patrick,
Okay I think it is "illegal" to use the word when trying to define that word.
So I will try a defintion that doesn't use the words subject, object, or
metaphysics.

I think if I wanted to explain this to somebody who has never read Pirsig I
would use this example

Whorf (1956) In describing a flash of light we are obliged to say "it flashed"
or a " a light flashed" setting up an actor "it" or a "a light" to perform
what we call an action "flash". But the flashing and the light are the same;
there is no thing which does something and no doing, Hopi says only rephi (pg
262)

P.S. to Scott (thinking about this example also has shed some light for me on
your comments about the consciousness thread but still interested in hearing
you expand on how things are explained in terms of consciousness)
