Apparently, Conan-Doyle's work is even less known than you suspect Bo.
For the Sherlock Holmes of the Conan-Doyle stories never, ever, used the
phrase "elementary Dr. Watson" or any variation thereof. The phrase was
introduced into Holmesian lore by the actor Basil Rathbone who played Holmes
in a popular series of films. Conan-Doyle never wrote the phrase, nor heard
it.
The closest phrase from any of Conan-Doyle's stories comes from 'The
Crooked Man'--- "Excellent!" I cried. "Elementary!", said he.
Watch out for those illusions,
