Squonk,
An example of redescription:
Squonk: "Do you really feel you are separate from experience?"
Squonk feels that I am saying that I am seperated from experience. I,
however, don't feel that way at all, and rarely does anything I write
suggest that. In fact, if you look closely, being seperated implies there
is something between us and reality, which is, in fact, what Rorty and I
are denying, and mystics and representationalists are affirming. Languange
is not between us and reality. All there is us and reality. Languange is
a tool we use to cope with reality.
Optimistic representationalists believe that they can use language to get
closer and closer to the real reality, cut through appearence to get to the
real. Pessimistic mystics believe that language will only bring us further
and further away from the real. Language is all appearence and the real
reality is experience prior to langauge. Rorty and I deny both the
optimistic and pessimistic readings. The whole problem is created because
we view language as a medium between us and reality. Following
Wittgenstein, the problem is semantic and Davidson and Rorty offer a
dissolution of the problem.
As for John and Wilber, I suspect that you should have added myself and
Rorty. The one thing that I am impressed the most about John and Wilber is
that they are syncretists. They take the widest range of material and
blend it together. Rorty is at heart an unoriginal syncretist, and I
happily follow in his footsteps, quoting him quoting others the whole way
through;-)
