One view is that the gospels were written down during the time when the
Christian sect was being driven out from its parent Jewish synagogues.
This was an unhappy situation, and at that time, the bad feelings
between the two groups became part of the emotion of the Christian
story. The narrative of the story (while still based on Jesus' core
teachings) changed to justify the Christian split off as a choice based
on values.

Our modern historical practice of recording "truth" as sets of "facts"
was new and not yet the norm. The details were less important than
transmitting the meaning.
