Hi Platt,
Thanks for the comments. I'm not particularly attached to 'eudaimonic', it's
just that it's strictly accurate for what I'm trying to get at (more
accurate than 'individual'). I think that a decision about a new name is
secondary to whether a new name is actually needed, and I haven't succeeded
in persuading people on that front yet. So for the time being I may as well
stick with it. I wasn't trying to be 'pretentious' though.....
As for psychotherapy, it's a rather different beast to psychiatry, not least
in that the latter is historically entirely SOM based, whereas therapy isn't
(eg Jung). I thought you were going to criticise therapy for being
philosophically vacuous! (Which in some ways it is, although I think it is
useful in certain contexts).
On Rembrandt, I recognise what Pirsig is saying about dynamic quality in
music, and certainly art can achieve that. But I still think there is
something else going on, which is _prima facie_ the opposite of what Pirsig
describes. To my mind, a great Rembrandt portrait can be 'lived with' in a
way that results in an increase in perceived quality, in the same way that a
great work of literature can be read and re-read with greater reward over
time. Such creative products are clearly 'static latched' - they have a
discrete and continuing embodiment - and I would be reluctant to fully agree
with what you said ("Rembrandt has the effect of making DQ "shine through"
to more people over more years than the jobber."). The part of that which I
am hesitant about is the D of DQ; to my mind such products have clear fourth
level static quality, and can be used to develop the appreciation and
exemplification of fourth level quality in other people. Because they are
not best understood as products of logic or science it seems misleading to
label them 'intellectual'. But having said that, I've got to the stage where
I'm running out of steam in this campaign :-) One last long post on it, if I
get the chance, and then it's time for it to end, methinks.
