Hey all-
I just wanted to use some of Roger's material to make some minor comments
about some of Fintan's posts. These posts are the one that deal with
Society having its rightful place ont top of intellect. This is a problem
that I was just recently tinkering with myself. I got some good posts from
Donny and Bodvar that helped me see the light.
IMHO, those who put Intellect over society are using the word
intellect to refer to what Roger here has called the Mind...
"...mind is a TOOL used by biological patterns to give them
more dynamic responses to stimuli. It allows them to store old static
instinctual patterns, but also to anticipate the environment and create new
reactions, etc.
Once minds became advanced enough to recognize other minds, a new level of
patterns began emerging ….. society. This is where creatures used the mind’s
ability to recognize patterns and communicate to control, influence, care,
cheat, lie, steal, protect, love, nurture, teach, etc."
If the word Intellect is substitued for mind you can easily see why it
would appear that Society is built on Intellect. However, Roger was clear
to note...
"The biological mind allowed society to form."
The BIOLOGICAL mind. Here these functions are just extensions of the
Biological and are so called the biological mind. And if these functions
are perceived to be the "Intellect" then Society would in fact be built on
Intellect but from the Sociological...
"The emergent higher level of Intellectual PoV’s includes philosophy, science,
metaphysics, logic and truth."
These are the type of things refered to by "Intellectual" and they are not
just extensions of the BIOLOGICAL MIND. They all require a society for
their existence.
IMHO this is what the confusion is about. Fintan's model should read:
INTELLECT
SOCIETY
MIND
BIOLOGY
INORGANIC/CHEMICAL
Its the same as Pirsig except that the "Biological Mind" has been given its
own level.
