hello Jonathan and everyone

What seemed to be happening was that thinking was automatic and not
really conscious once a stimulus word had been given, and, previous to
that, the particular type of association demanded had been adequately
understood by the observer.

Jonathan wrote:

This is pattern matching at work. The "understanding" is the brain
detecting and deriving meaning from the word. The subject hears "oak"
and immediately the neurons start firing and making all sorts of word
and image associations. Utter the word "oak" to a non-English speaker
and the pattern matching doesn't take place - THE WORD HAS NO MEANING.
This is exactly what Fintan wrote in his MoM (derived from me, of
course;-)

Jonathan, i am not so sure that the blank third period can be associated
with pattern matching in any way. nothing happens. and yet "something" must
clearly be happening in order for the response to occur. pattern matching
occurs in the first period of instruction, in the second period of stimulus
and the forth period of response, but absolutely nothing happens during the
third period. if it is not pattern matching, it is perhaps pattern
de-matching. and that leads to clues as to how the intellect and social
levels in the Metaphysics of Quality interact morally thru inherent forces
of values.

what is missing when a foreign word is uttered is the entire partially
constrained aspect of the experiment, and therefore i really dont think its
an apt analogy here. perhaps you could expand on your meaning if you think
me incorrect.
it does seem to hold some intriguing possibilities.
i agree several of Fintan's ideas and my own are concurrent but there are
also some differences as well.

Jonathan writes:

This is the exact opposite of what Fintan wrote. Fintan went along with
conventional wisdom that says that logical thought is word manipulation,
a Left-brain function. Fintan puts Society on the Right (with emotion?),
while you put it on the Left with language - society's main
communication tool.
Glove, I can see value in both approaches. Perhaps the real solution is
that neither intellect nor society are really "half-brain" phenomena.

Jonathan, perhaps you are correct, the interaction is where Quality resides.
yet there are some fundamental differences in Fintan's Metaphysics of
Meaning and the Metaphysics of Quality. i hope there are none in my
suggestions and if there are, then these differences must be reconciled.

Jonathan writes:

In support, I have a quote from Albert Einstein which I have been saved
for the RighT moment:-
The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery.
There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition
or what you will, and the solution comes to you and
you don't know how or why.
                             — Albert Einstein

Jonathan, a very apt quote and one i am in full agreement with.

best wishes,

glove
