Fred, Bob and all moq X Filers:
It may interest you to know that Carl Jung was preoccupied with ufos as
far back as 1946. He read every book and newspaper article that was
published. He read every report issued by the universities, the
government and the military. He wrote to a friend in 1951 expressing
his perplexity, saying he really didn't know if ufos were rumour, fact
or mass hallucination. The same letter also points to our divided world,
the cold war's iron curtain, and the psychic toll such a state has on
the individual.
He finally published a book on the subject in 1958 called "FLYING
SAUCERS: A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies". Here's a little
taste...
THE WHOLE COLLECTIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN OPENED UP BY
THE SAUCER EPIDEMIC STANDS IN COMPENSATORY ANTITHESIS TO OUR SCIENTIFIC
PICTURE OF THE WORLD... INSTEAD OF A BRIGHTLY COLORED PICTURE OF THE
REAL WORLD WE HAVE A BLEAK, SHALLOW RATIONALISM THAT OFFERS STONES
INSTEAD OF BREAD TO THE EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL HUNGERS OF THE WORLD.
THE LOGICAL RESULT IS AN INSATIABLE HUNGER FOR ANYTHING EXTRAORDINARY.
IT IS THEREFORE NOT SURPRISING IF ALL SORTS OF SIGNS AND WONDERS APPEAR
IN THE SKY, OR IF MIRACULOUS INTERVENTION, WHERE HUMAN EFFORTS HAVE
FAILED, IS EXPECTED FROM HEAVEN.
I think the main thesis of the thin book is that most ufo sightings are
either ordinary objects mistaken for something else or they are neurotic
projections. The psychic strain on individuals who live in our divided
and scientific world is enormous and many, in the frutrated struggle
toward wholeness, project a symbol of unity and transcendence that
satisfies that kind of strain. Ironically, the sci-fi images they report
challenge the standard scientific world view. They report high-tech
craft and tools that defy our understanding of of basic physical
science, like like super long distance space travel and gravity. The
conspiracy theories that surrond ufo lore equally undermine the
representative of the established order; the academy, the media, the
government, big corporations, etc.. We live in an X Files world. The
style is para noir. Cynical paranoia rules.
