I am new to this arena of thought so forgive me if I reiterate or repeat
ideas or statements which have been spoken before. As I understand from
Pirsigs philosophy, reason seems to be synonymous with quality, so the
question “what is the reason for reason?” is really the question “what is the
reason for quality?”
I do not believe that we can ever truthfully (philosophically) answer this
question, and Pirsigs avoidance of it suggests that he probably agrees too.
Each of us has our own opinions and beliefs, that’s what makes us individual.
And these beliefs are based upon the value patterns which inhabit our mind
set. The mere existance of this diversity of thought in my opinion (or using
my set of values) prohibits universal truth. Imagine a world where everybody
understood quality, where everybody valued the same things. What a static
place it would be.
