Dear Steve, Platt and Jonathan,
According to me the simplest way to see things (and to correct the
carelessness of Pirsig and the internal contridications of 'Lila') is thus:
The levels are a way of distinguishing the different types of static quality
by their different amounts of Dynamic Quality. Both sq and DQ are essential
to maintain the world as we know it. So in a sense (when assessing Quality
as a whole), yes, "The Theory of Relativity" is in a sense equivalent to the
Carbon atom. In another sense (when assessing DQ) the first is better.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
