    Sam said:
I've put all this in some detail because I want to get away from the sense
that I'm trying to defend the 'church' - understood as the level 3 social
organisation, as opposed to the 'tradition', by which I mean the teachings
of people like Augustine or John of the Cross. Despite denials, you still
seem to be equating me with someone defending level 3 social structures, not
the level 4/5 teachings. And the answer to your final question is yes (did
you expect otherwise?). But it's not that important.

    DMB says:
I have to confess that your theology lesson made little sense to me, but
thanks for expanding my vocabulary. And I don't see how the exercise you
described has anything to do with mysticism. You seem to be saying that
mystical experiences are unimportant and that the intellect is only a
hinderance while at the same time claiming that these views are 4th and 5th
level teachings. It seems to me that you're rejecting both intellect and the
mystical experience, which leaves us with the third level. Sure, its not so
stupid and crass as fundamentalism, but that doesn't put this tradition at a
higher level. Its just better at the third level.

By the way, the words "cataphatic" and "apophatic" do not appear in my
dictionary, and its an excellent dictionary. However, it does list
"cataphasia" which is defined as a pathology, a speech disorder in which a
person constantly repeats a word or phrase. Similarly, "apophasis" is a kind
of ironic denial of one's intention to speak of a person even as one speaks
of that person. For example, I won't mention Sam's attempt to paint
linguistic rituals as something mystical. I won't say anything about Sam's
attempt to portray static verbal repition as a dynamic experience. See? I
said I wouldn't even as I did. Paradox? Humor? Irony? Or perhaps just
    irrational and self-contradictory?

    Thanks,
    DMB
