The paraphrasing of mine that you are referring to here
was about astrology, not the I Ching.
But if you would like to tell me about the I Ching, go ahead.

Actually, the Jungians (and Pirsig) are quite ambivalent and
in some ways hypocritical in their attitudes toward science. No
sooner do they belittle science than they ask for its expansion
so that their dearest ideas can be admitted as such.

I think the only reason 'synchronicity' is in the dictionary
is because it was already a word before Jung made use of it,
and it's a lot easier to justify adding a secondary meaning to
an existing word than adding a brand new one. The I Ching is
indeed an ancient practice that has withstood the ages but like
so many occult practices, it survives because people imbue their
vague pronouncements with deep meaning that are difficult to
    prove wrong.

Synchronicity is no different. For example, Jung found out that
the beetle scarab was an Egyptian symbol denoting rebirth. Jung
also noted that the beetle was flying around in the room, trapped.
This led him to believe that the deeper meaning from all this was
that the patient needed to be liberated from her overly rational
tendencies. Probably Jung considered this a problem of hers
already, as she perhaps had the common sense to doubt some
other conclusions of his over the course of her treatment.
