Hi GJ,
I'm new here. I'm Dutch, I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance four times and Lila once, I will read it again. I am 17
years old. Now y'all know me I'll give my first contribution to
MoQ_Discuss :)
I think the Phaedrus system is quite a good idea. I don't know about
other languages (I guess it's all the same but I wouldn't know for sure)
but in the Dutch version Lila is divided into several chapters (32 to be
precise). Now if you don't start counting Phaedrus's from the start of
the book but from chapter to chapter, you'd get something like
[chapter]_[phaedrus index], eg 12_4 or 32_9.
I realize it is not really a solution but it does make it easer to count
all the Phaedrus' in every copy of the book. However, the risk of people
counting wrong might still be too big.
Willy

Onderwerp: RE: MD Mapping the Book
While pondering over a problem I came up with this.. Please comment.
three systems of getting around in Lila:
Page reffering system
Using this system we put a pagenumber after anny given keyword. The
advantage of this system is that searching a keyword is usually the
quickest
way. Most of our known indexes are based on page reffering systems. The
great disadvantage in our case is that we have multiple prints in
multiple
languages. The differents in pages are as many as the differents in
books.
Even books in the same language have different page sizes and different
character sizes. Using a page reffering system to make an
inter-book-index
is a hell of a job and must be changed after every copy of the book that
will be published in the future.
example of page reffering system: [ 'MoQ' see page 25 ]
Alinea reffering system
This system uses the ammount of alinea's within the story. The great
advantage of this system over a page reffering system is that the alinea
is
created by the writer. So every book has the same alineas. The great
disadvantage in our case is the overkill of alinea breaks Pirsig used to
handle spoken text. Breaking the book up in alineas would ussualy be a
not-so-hard task. But in our case its unclear in some parts of the texts
where the alinea ends.
Example of alinea reffering system: [ 'MoQ' see chapter 2 alinea 11]
Phaedrus reffering system
This system uses the word 'Phaedrus' to pinpoint locations in the book.
The
great advantage of this system is that its completely unaffected by
languages and book or character size. It's a bit strange but maybe it
works.
If it works we can make an index that has only to be written once. After
that every book in anny language can use it because sentences are not
broken
up by translators. The word 'Phaedrus' will not be translated because
its a
name. The system will also work for every copy of the book that will be
published in the future. The great disadvantage is that everybody who
wants
to use this inter-book-index has to do a little homework by placing
numbers
after every sentence where the word 'Phaedrus' is printed.
Example of Phaedrus reffering system [ 'Program-cards' see chapter 2
Phaedrus 3 +6 ] Where the +6 is telling you the exact sentence where the
specific keyword is printed.
It's just an idea for now. A completely Nuts idea, if I may say so
myself.
But its the only idea that I got after considering the possibilities of
making an inter-book-index. I still have to 'check' the amount of
'Phaedrus'
in every chapter to see if it's equally spreaded through the book.
Offcourse, if someone else has an idea to create an inter-book-index
that is
a lot better.. please let me know.. If you like or dislike the idea..
Let it
hear also..
