on our foreheads: "I don't know much, but I like what I know." This
would reflect what seems to me a much more common method of
evaluation. It explains why someone might claim that Norman Rockwell
was a better painter than, say, Jackson Pollack. Or that Vivaldi was
a greater composer than Schoenberg. Or that Bill O'Reilley is a more
valuable political thinker than Noam Chomsky. ;-)
