Platt asked Ant:
................... Regarding government supervision of this free
market of thought, do you think Pirsig would be in favor of such
supervision to protect universities from monopolies of thought? Some of
our state legislatures are concerned with the monopoly of liberal thought
at their state-supported universities and have sponsored "Academic Bill of
Rights" legislation to break up such monopolies and insure diversity of
thought on campuses.
dmb says:
A bill of rights to break up a monopoly? Orwell is spinning in his grave.
This is government tampering of the worst kind. This is a good example of
the immorality Pirsig is talking about. There is no monopoly. (There are
perfectly natural reasons why most academic professionals are not
conservative.) Passing a law to achieve ideological balance on campus is
antithetical to intellectual freedom. Imagine if we insisted upon
ideological balance among cops, soldiers or CEOs. Its ridiculous.
