    Hi Ant, Platt, and all...

Been busy, so just reading lately.... But I just gotta jump in
    here...

    Platt:
    >Are not Bill Buckley, Bill Gates and Wallace Carothers
    >(inventor of nylon) intellectuals?

    Ant:
Bill Buckley’s position would be more ambiguous. As far as he isn’t
a stooge for the Right (as independence of thought is, no doubt, a
requirement for being an intellectual) he is possibly an intellectual
though I also have an impression is that his “day job” these days
tends to be more as a political commentator.

    msh adds:
To find out what happens when Buckley confronts a REAL intellectual,
see if you can find Chomsky's one and only appearance on Firing Line,
way back in 1969, where the primary topic was US involvement in
Vietnam. I just happened to listen to the tape again over the
weekend. I didn't think it was possible, but I actually felt bad for
Buckley. What's telling is that Buckley said he'd have Chomsky back
soon, so they could finish the discussion. That was 35 years ago....

    Back to work,
    msh
