hi everyone,
platt:
"Nice try at a smokescreen. You have yet to identify
any Buddhist
philosophers that have had any significance influence
in the West which
is
dominated by SOM whether you want to admit it or not.
Buddhism is a
religion more than a philosophy. When you see
monasteries and monks
associated with a particular worldview, you can bet
you're looking at a
religious pattern."
gav: how about pirsig - he is a buddhist philosopher.
he has sold over 7 million books in the west. iŽd say
that was influence.
no, christianity is more a religion than buddhism; and
conversely buddhism is much more of a philosophy than
christianity. in jc's day this may not have been the
case. i seem to remember hearing that JC is considered
a buddhist philosopher by some schools of buddhism.
which makes total sense if you have ever read the
gospel of thomas.
then of course there is guatama buddha. his influence
can be seen morphed into many forms, from oprah
self-helpers, lifestyle gurus, even hollywood celebs.
all these people have mucho influence in the states.
and then there is the dalai lama whose book sales in
the US would also number in the millions. having also
been the subject of hollywood films and many docos and
interviews in america i find it hard to believe that
his influence is nil there.
the point is that the MOQ is a bridge between buddhist
wisdom and serenity, and western logic and analysis.
without this bridge a root change in the western
worldview is unlikely; with it...perhaps just a matter
of years, probably decades though.
