    Erin,

What I saw was a number of exchanges between folks trying to decide
on the best religion. If you already understand what I'm saying,
then you might want to consider the possibility that I wasn't talking
    to you. This requires ego-dampening...

If you don't agree with what I'm saying, then present an argument.

    Best,

Well I'm not clear at what confusion you think you cleared up?
1st paragraph---yeah familiar withthe gist of what you are saying,
where did you see an argument for a literal interpetation of myths?
2nd- not going to bother responding because it just seems too silly
    to bother

        Hi all,

Though I'm usually shy about expressing my opinion on this list (ask
anyone), I think I'll jump in here:

Whomever said "All religions are true" got it half right. All
religions are false AND true. They are historically and often
scientifically false whenever they use myth (which is just about all
the fn time) to point to some very real truths. Myth is used because
metaphor is more powerful than fact and always has been.

The confusion you're all struggling with here arises because,
somewhere in time, whomever introduced you to religion (nay, poured
religion into your brains) forgot to mention this subtle distinction,
if even they were aware of it. The result is you have a bunch of
fully grown adults going around thinking, for example, that some guy
actually walked on water, multiplied loaves and fishes, was
crucified, died, and was buried... then rose from the dead. This
makes for a lot of heavy back unloading of bs in the later years.

I've often thought this confusion would be avoided if every child was
taken from his parents at an impressionable age and required by law
        to read Shakespeare.

        Best,
        msh

I'm sorry I just don't think you can say anti religion this and anti
religion that and then talk about the praises of a religion you like-
just seems too mixed of a message to me and even seems very
unbuddhistlike for that matter!(is that a word?)

However, Buddhism certainly isn't an oppressive m! onolithic
