Hi Jay,
I've mentioned Jonathan Edwards before in relation to something David L.
Hall called the "aesthetic axis of American philosophy." Its just a fancy
name for a deeply imbedded theme of aesthetic pluralism in American
thought. Jonathan Edwards happened to be the beginning of Hall's axis and
included Emerson, Peirce, James, Dewey, and Whitehead. He constructed it
to illuminate another philosopher's position in it, Richard Rorty, and I
would argue that Pirsig fits in the axis as well.
So, I would definitely applaud your efforts and urge you to continue to
compare Edwards and Pirsig. Though I have not read Edwards, what little I
know would make such a colligation appear fruitful.
Matt
