    steve:
No, I'm just wondering what the fear is about teaching Creationism.

    msh says:
    As I said earlier, I don't see any fear about teaching Creationism;
what I see is concern over how public funds set aside for the study
of science might be used to teach non-scientific ideas.

    steve:
I can't even imagine what that would look like in a science classroom
other than the teacher saying that some people believe that God
created all the species to be how they are. What else would be said?

    msh says:
Maybe nothing. Or maybe this would launch a huge, time-consuming,
non-scientific debate about the relative merits of all the various
creation mythologies. But is the class hour reserved for biology or
mythology? Again, it's a time and money allocation issue. Besides,
it wouldn't be necessary to say that some people think that God
created all the species; my guess is that any mid-western USA high
school student would be well aware of this.

    steve:
I imagine that a discussion of the relative merits of different ideas
about the origin of species would ensue, but I can't think of what
the lesson on Creationism would be like. Can you help me imagine it?

    msh says:
I don't think I can help, no. I have no idea how one would go about
teaching non-scientific ideas in a science class. I guess we could
    ask a Creation Scientist.

    Thanks,
    Mark Steven Heyman (msh)
