Yes, too difficult a task for all those tired old academicians
tossing round the numbers, but not for mel.
Let's make it simple: Suppose there were only two million Indians in
North America in 1800. Let's say by 1900 there were 250,000, as a
million had chosen to "kill themselves" by assimilating, and 750,000
had been murdered because they chose not to assimilate and the
conquering power really, really wanted their land.
How does the choice of the million justify the slaughter of the
750,000?
This sort of apologetic for genocide has been around for as long as
there have been colonial powers.
Best to all,

Discovered this when looking into my own family background. Any Indian who leaves the "traditional way" is considered "white" by the traditionals. Kansas alone has a good three to five times more Indians than Census will ever count. The Indian citizenship acts often made whole tribes disappear. In other states as well, the "civilized" Indians learned to farm the same ground and went to the same denominational churches, bore the same last names... their children moved to new places, passed for white and hid their backgrounds until their grandkids new no different than that they were white. The folks who toss the numbers don't tend to follow that line, as it is too hard to trace.
