    I largely agree with your and Sam's sentiments. In fact I think most
    charitable giving is superficial and is a waste of time and resources in
    dealing with the underlying long-term issues of poverty, unemployment,
    disease and ignorance - that ultimately, what is required are fundamental
    and radical changes to global government and business policies that
    contribute to these problems. That is why everyone on this List, for
    instance, should read writers such as Noam Chomsky and John Pilger -
    carefully and with an open mind.

    However, on this rare occasion - due to the scale of the disaster - I
    thought it merited a more immediate, practical response.
