Greetings,
Congratulations to Dan for getting Lila's Child into print. As one of
the 'authors', it would seem that my view deserves to be heard. Suffice
to say that I hope lots of people who think Lila has something useful to
say do read this. I confess to being amazed at Dan's perseverance in
actually seeing the project through and am very impressed with the
result.
I ploughed through my free copy, cringed at the awfulness of our
conversations, alternately laughed and winced at Pirsig's equally
amateurish interjections, before penning a pointlessly watertight reply
or two to the more overtly illogical and hypocritical claims of Pirsig.
Eventually I gave up reading and threw LC into the bin. The publisher's
website introduces LC as, 'By Introduction and Annotations by Robert M.
Pirsig Compiled by Dan Glover', which, although not making sense in
itself, is about as coherent as it gets; a good ego massager for those
more limited contributors who want to show off to family and friends
(can you imagine giving that to someone you like?), but entirely
valueless for anyone serious about philosophy. Thank you, Dan, for
making it available to all and thank you HUGELY for putting Pirsig's
name on the front cover. Much appreciated.
(You will all, I am sure, be delighted to hear that my full review will
appear on amazon.com in the near future)
If anyone considers making a sequel (God forbid), to save you a bit of
time, be aware that you will not gain permission to use my
contributions, so leave me out.
Struan
PS. I note with no surprise but great pleasure, Horse has been unable to
support his ignorant and spurious accusation that positivism attempts to
belittle art and music, despite his insistence that others are duty
bound to back up such malicious accusations with evidence. Perhaps the
huge and dreadfully time consuming effort involved in turning two essays
into html has distracted him. Let us give him a few days more before
reminding him again of his obligation to his own rather perverse
morality.
