Dear Steve,
You wrote 28 Jan 2003 18:42:54 -0500:
'I believe the "A values precondition B" thing was used by Pirsig to show
how SOM fits within the MOQ framework, but I don't think A and B are the
patterns at all in this example. The pattern is the sort of relationship
between A and B which is value-centered.'
For me the 'pattern' is rather the repetitive experience of A's valuing B's.
More about that in a longer e-mail in the 'Making sense of it (levels)'
thread.
In the expression 'repetitive experience of A's valuing B's', the 'of A's
valuing B's' part is an explanation (deduction) in MoQ terms. The same
pattern of value can be described with the expression 'repetitive experience
of A's causing B's', which contains an explanation in SOM terms.
My version of the MoQ differs slightly from Pirsig's one in favoring the
expression 'A values result B' as a substitution for 'A causes B' over 'B
values precondition A'.
I also hold that BOTH 'A valuing B' AND 'me valuing (in the selective
experiencing of only part of my sensory perceptions always seeing) A
followed by B' are valid MoQ explanations of the same pattern of value (=
experience).
With friendly greetings,
Wim
