Hi Sam,
I'm still a student myself and for the last 2 years my mind has been
actively in persuit of ideas to better our current schooling system.
Although it is not hard to see what is going wrong with the current system
and some changes (like promoting more creativity) seem apparent, I have
found it difficult to think up a schooling system that allows for more
inovation and less imitation while still ending up with the standards set by
society.
I agree with the many here that say that the social aspect of going to
school is paramount, further i believe raising your children while asking
them for their own input is not only important but also a valuable lesson.
Don't let your children blindly follow you, but let them think for
themselves is probably the reason for considering giving home schooling..
My personal goal is to play a role in bringing some philosophy back to
school, aristoteles idea of a university was'nt bad in my opinion, it was
however bad in my opinion that each idea and method was no longer questioned
over the years. To me retoric in a modern form is greatly missed in current
schools, and I believe that teaching students to write or talk about their
ideas whilst forcing them to argumentate and think about their own creative
ideas and believes could have a great beneficial impact on soceity.
Perhaps an idea is to teach some philosophy and retoric (that is if you
share my opinion) to your children at home while letting them follow "normal
schooling" at a public place is a compromise?
The worst that could happen is that they activily start questioning their
teachers in high school.
I'm greatly interested in your choice, according to what I've read from you
so far i'm sure it will be a good one.
Regards Robin
