    If you read the piece you would know that the author was talking about
    left-wing liberalism, i.e., socialism as "stultifying" in practice even
    though the theory appeals to many with "good intentions" of which the road
    to hell is paved with.

    The article originally appeared in the NY Times. Glad you identify the
    Times as "drivel." I don't trust it as source for news and analysis
    either, except in this case I think the author was on target. I will await
    Wim's analysis. I referred to the site that picked up the article from
    the Times rather than the Times site itself because the Times site
    requires that you register in order to read the article. I was trying to
    save MD'ers some time and trouble. But, as usual, you searched for
    ulterior motives that don't exist.
