As well as 'googling' (what a strange word!) for emergent properties you might also take
a look at the work of Rodney Brooks at MIT. His work with robots and artificial life has a
lot of references to emergence. He's also produced some very readable papers which
should be available online - a couple of titles are 'Fast, cheap and out of control', 'A
robot that walks: Emergent behaviors from a carefully evolved network', (a bit more
technical maybe) and my favourite title 'Elephants don't play chess'. In this respect
emergent behaviours are very closely linked with subsumption architectures - something
else Brooks had a hand in developing. Fascinating stuff.

Cheers Platt. It's definitely my pleasure to keep the MoQ lists and site active and
promote Pirsigs ideas.
