    Platt, on emergence ...

I'm flattered by the "if anyone can Ian can" confidence.
I'm going to have very little on-line time for the next few days, but
    I will come back.

Can I suggest you follow-up some of the subjects "over your head" with
the authors I've already mentioned (Stewart, Gleick, Hofstadter and
Deutsch), and of course Dawkins and Dennett. Evolution is the
archetypal (but not exclusive) area to see emergence explained. (I
will come back with some more examples as to how I would explain and
    illustrate the idea.)

Forget "objective scientific causal proof" (suspend disbelief anyway)
    Think "believable quality explanation".

    See ya
    Ian
