Thank you, David, and I agree. One of my favorites is M. Scott Peck,
A Different Drum. In there he talks about this weakness in
Christianity. He describe four distinct stages of spiritual growth,
Chaotic, Rule Bound, Seeking and Enlightened and shows how mainstream
church strength is in the big conversion from chaotic to rule bound,
but very poor in nurturing much forward.
He also says that one of the things all the great religions have in
common is their teachings must appeal and make sense to stage 2 and
stage 4 simultaneously. And you can't mentor someone more than one
level below you. When the mystics try and talk to the rule-bound
stage 2 types, they are usually misunderstood or crucified or what
have you.
