Yes, the way I've used "biological pattern" is confusing. My fault.
I think it's clear from the more extended dialogue that Sam and I are
talking about incarcerating human beings who engage in certain B-D
behavior which, left unchecked, will be socially destructive.

equating a biological pattern with a human being.
