Dear Sam,
Well-said Sam! My appreciation of priesthood has gone up several steps
(starting and ending in minus something, of course (-; ).
I especially liked the scapegoat part. Reminded me of René Girard, who
argued that all religion is based in scapegoating: primitive societies
murdering their prophets/heritics/kings, therebye uniting around shared
guilt about & adoration of the murdered person despite the mimetic greed
that threatens to break all human societies. René Girard also argued that
Christianity is special, because it transformed this basis of religion by
revealing it: where every other religion hides the murder it is based on,
Christianity explicitly makes it into its founding myth AND several Bible
texts describe explicitly how scapegoat murder founded society.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
