    Marsha,

"Even in her angry, distorted, physical form, Lila brought great
gifts. Lila is life. Or maybe what is missing in life. Lila is Dynamic
Quality. Lila lives in each of us, but in what form? To fully experience
life, this should be considered, explored and appreciated. I think."

I don't hear that from this forum, in general. Can you point me to
some threads where the discussions like this have taken place? I'd be
    interested. It's not that this couldn't be correct, it's that I don't
see Pirsig arguing that point. In these forums I've only seen Lila,
the woman, referred to as a plot device way back when someone raised
the charge of Pirsig being a sexist. (That's where Lila is only a
plot device came from--I don't recall the plot device idea being
    challenged).

And Marsha, it's not that I don't agree with you within the context of
Lila out in the world as a real person. It's inside the context of
the book that gives me trouble. I don't think that was what Pirsig
was getting at. I mean, in no way did it come off as a love story and
for it to be a high quality experience wouldn't there need to be some
"love" there? The narrator remains analytical and completely in his
head as far as I can see. I never felt a heart connection between
Pirsig and Lila. He found her interesting from a detached, almost
clinical point of view. Do you get my point? It's not how you see
Lila--it's how I see Pirsig seeing Lila that turns me off.
