    Hi all,

    On 20 Aug 2005 at 0:19, Mati Palm-Leis wrote:

"Intellectual guidance" is a strange word but I will work with it and
suggest that it means using reason to guide ones decisions. I would suspect
that either side would and could claim to provide thee intellectual
guidance. For one party to claim sole possession of Intellectual guidance
would be like Conservatives claiming God is Republican. (I haven't found
that verse in the bible yet. :-)) I would have to side with Platt that
neither side can claim to be sole possessor of "Intellectual guidance".

    msh:
Neither side has claimed sole possession of intellectual guidance.
This is a straw man stuffed by Platt.

One's ideas, right or left or in between, are intellectually valid if
they can be supported by argument and evidence and, here, with the
principles of the MOQ. If someone refuses to engage in honest
discussion by evading or distorting questions asked of him, yet
continues to spout his disputed ideas as if they were categorically
correct, then he is relinquishing the right to claim the intellectual
    high ground.

Please examine the recent Moral Society thread to see a clear example
    of what I mean.

In a recent post, Platt said he leaves his mind open to the
possibility that both he, on the right, and his antagonists on the
left, might be wrong. What about the possibility that his
antagonists are right, and he is wrong? There doesn't seem to be any
room for that option, as anyone who carefully reads the thread
    mentioned above will see.
