Hi jc and Sam, (and Horse), and all,

To paraphrase from a Beatles song, "And in the end, the quality you
take is equal to the quality you make."
msh:
Hi jc. Point taken. And, as you see, I haven't given up on MD.
BTW, my comment about the black hole shouldn't be taken to mean that
there's no value to be found here; there's plenty of value coming
from some incredibly rounded, well-read, and intelligent people. The
problem is that the black hole swallows up that value, and we spend a
lot of time having to repeat ourselves or scour the archives.
Which leads to Sam's comment...

Precisely so. And not just in politics. I think serious thought needs
to be given to how to 'static latch' some of the insights that have
been generated over time on MD. I had thought that MF might be one
such, but now I suspect that some sort of wiki endeavour is needed.
msh:
Yeah, the wiki idea is a good one, I think, though it might take some
time and expense to implement.
Meantime, it would be nice to have a database of URLs to specific
posts, searchable by keywords or questions, maybe, much like what
Horse has implemented for posts since Jan-2005 at OpenSubscriber.com
(Thanks for that, Horse!)
So that, if a new lister has a question that's been asked and
answered in the past, we could more easily provide the links. This
would also be useful for providing links to refutation of oft
repeated ideas. I'm kinda working on a FAQ/FDI (Frequently Debunked
Ideas) database of my own; if I come up with something useful, anyone
who wants it can have it, of course.
BTW, for anyone who doesn't know, it's possible to bypass the MOQ
site entry to the archives (in case you're having trouble with it,
and you really gotta find something) and jump right to the message
lists. Just format your URL like this, for example:
http://www.venus.co.uk/hypermail/moq_discuss/200508byauthor.html
This takes you to the August 2005 page with posts sorted by Author.
And, of course, you can change the date sequence (200406 for June
2004, e.g.). And you can use bydate, byindex (for thread) and
bysubject, as well as byauthor. You can setup several bookmarks in
your browser for quickly accessing frequently used areas.
For posts prior tp November 2002, the format is a little different:
for example, this is August 2000, by date:
http://alt.venus.co.uk/hypermail/moq_discuss/0008/date.html
So you'd use
http://alt.venus.co.uk/hypermail/moq_discuss/9812/author.html for
December 1998, sorted by author. You get the picture.
(All of this assumes, of course, that Horse's server is online).
Best to all,
Mark Steven Heyman (msh)

It seems certain that Einstein was doubly wrong when he said "God
does not play dice." Consideration of particle emission from black
holes would seem to suggest that God not only plays dice but also
sometimes throws them where they cannot be seen.
